Late-Night Eating Sabotaging Your Waistline? Not Necessarily…

There’s a message that’s been circulating for years now that you shouldn’t eat after a certain hour, say 7 or 8pm, if you want to avoid gaining weight. But this is nothing more than a misleading myth, for the simple reason that our bodies burn calories even when we’re sleeping.

Studies on this topic consistently show that nighttime eating is not the culprit it’s made out be. The focus of your dietary intake should still remain on the actual cause weight gain – too many calories being consumed overall. Therefore, it’s not necessarily the timing of eating but the amount  that can lead to excess pounds gained. This is because, as you know, your body will store those extra calories as fat if you consume more calories than you burn in a day, regardless of consumption time.

But here’s where you need to be careful: avoid late-night binging!

If you find you’re ravenous at night, it’s a good indication that you’re not getting enough calories from your meals throughout the day. This is clearly why the super-restrictive, low-calorie diets backfire – they’re too difficult physiologically to maintain.

The better approach is to eat meals, appropriately portioned, consistently throughout the day. Try consuming 4-5 smaller meals, which will provide you with fuel and prevent overwhelming feelings of hunger.

Remember: your body does not process food differently after the sun goes down. Your metabolism is still active, especially if you’ve done a Kettlebell workout! Eating too many calories overall, regardless of the time of day in which you do so, can lead to weight gain.

Happy Holidays!

Best, Lorna
