Take it Slow


Today’s world often seems like a force-fed sound bite with time limits on everything from Instagram videos to TED talks. Keep it short and snappy, since that’s the way to catch people’s attention. But the inverse it true when it comes to your own attention, your own success.

Recall how long it took for you to earn a degree, the process you went through to achieve the career you have, or the journey it took to become fit. For me, the journey to fitness was long, requiring 7 years to overcome long-long exercise-induced asthma.  And the struggle was not easy, physically or emotionally. I had never run a mile, or even a quarter mile without needing to pause and wait for my breath to return, so I didn’t know what it felt like to workout non-stop for any length of time. It wasn’t until many years passed that I could run, jump, skip rope and lift weights without doubling over due to heavy wheezing.

How would that process have occurred if it were rushed? I can’t imagine, unless I consumed a significant amount of meds that would have eventually taken a toll on my joints and overall health.

So let the world continue to speed up around you, it’s not going to change. But you will. Slow is the way to go if you want to achieve your inner ability. Take it slow and enjoy the ride,  savor the learning, devour the present, and absorb a sense of trust in yourself.
